The mission of the Biology Department is to provide students with a relevant education for biomedical and biotechnological careers, to lead in molecular biological research, and to serve the university and the scientific community. The Biology program prepares undergraduate students for graduate education in the medically allied professions and in the specialized fields of the biological sciences.

A wide variety of career opportunities is currently available for those individuals possessing advanced knowledge and skills, particularly in the areas of biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, ecology, genetics, endocrinology, and immunology.

B.S. in Biology

B.A. in Biology

Program Description: 

The Bachelor of Arts in Biology provides a rigorous and broad education in Biology and supporting sciences, and captures the social and ethical implications pertinent to today’s world view. Graduates of this program are well positioned to pursue careers at the interface of Biology and other disciplines, including in such varied areas as patent law, science communication, and secondary education, as well as postgraduate studies.

Program Learning Outcomes:

Graduates will be able to

  1. Understand, critically evaluate, and communicate
    information related to Biology
  2. Use the scientific method to collect and analyze
    quantitative data
  3. Articulate the ethical implications of biological
    research and its impact on society

B.S. in Biomedical Sciences (BMS)

Program Description: 

The Biomedical Sciences Program is a  unique, interdisciplinary program that offers students the opportunity to take classes in science and engineering that prepare them for biomedicine and biotechnology fields. NM Tech’s BMS program differs from other bioscience programs because it provides training in both science and engineering.

Students explore biology-based issues as they relate to human life, health, and disease, with an up-and-coming technical edge. Students participate in designing new technologies, such as developing pharmaceuticals, creating synthetic skin or finding patterns in biological data sets.

The broad training prepares students to work in biotechnology companies, or to go to medical or veterinary school, and to do graduate research in various biomedical fields.

Accelerated B.S./M.S. Biology Program

Exceptionally qualified and motivated students may earn both BS and MS degrees in Biology in five years. The student fulfills the requirements for a BS degree in four years and for an MS degree the following year. A minimum of 160 credit hours are required to complete both degrees. The MS degree requires the completion of a thesis based on the student’s own research.

Students may apply for the BS/MS program as early as the end of their 4th semester and no later than the end of the 6th semester.
